Starting March 18

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy/Stress Reduction Training
Presented by Dr. Patrick Thornton

Mindfulness-based Cognitive therapy (MBCT) and Stress Reduction (MBST) were first introduced over 25 years ago by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and was featured by Bill Moyers in his series "Healing and The Mind." It has been successfully applied in work with borderline personality disorders, PTSD, victims of physical and sexual abuse, anxiety disorders, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, and phobias, among others. Mindfulness practice has become fundamental to such therapeutic methods as Dialectal Behavioral, Relational, Cognitive Behavioral and Insight Therapies, and the work of such individuals as Marsh Linehan, (Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder), Zendel Segal and John Teasdale, et.al. (Integrated Treatment of Dual Disorders) and Janet Surrey (Relational Psychotherapy, Relational Mindfulness), to name a few.

Current research includes such areas as psychological symptomatology, integration of dynamic psychotherapy, group therapy for women with PTSD and histories of childhood sexual abuse, ADHD in adults, intervention for fibromyalgia, eating disorders and OCD. Institutes conducting research include Stanford, Oxford Center for Suicide Research, the NIH, University of Toronto, Duke, Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania, the Center for Addiction & Mental Health, UCSF, University of Arizona and George Meson University of Clinical Psychology.

Dr. Patrick Thornton has over 40 years experience working with individuals in life crisis, and over 30 years experience in contemplative practices, close to 15 years of which have been in the clinical application of Mindfulness-based practices. He was one of the first to introduce Mindfulness practices in clinical settings on the West Coast, and the first to provide a Mindfulness-based pain management program at Kaiser Permanente. He was also a lead author of the curriculum standards and teacher qualifications now incorporated in the certification program at the Center of Mindfulness & Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, MA.
